Bed Base vs Bed Frame: What NZ Buyers Should Know
“Bed base” and “bed frame” are often used interchangeably, but they do different jobs. Getting the terminology right helps you buy the correct support for your mattress and avoid a mismatch that shortens its life.
1. What a Bed Base Does
A bed base is the support surface your mattress sits on. Common types in New Zealand:
- Slat base — timber or metal slats that support the mattress and allow airflow. Pocket-spring mattresses generally need closer slat spacing.
- Ensemble base — a fabric-covered base (often with castors) that the mattress sits directly on; common for guest rooms and kids beds.
- Platform base — a solid or slatted low-profile base, often part of a modern bed design.
2. What a Bed Frame Does
A bed frame is the structural surround — typically a headboard, footboard and side rails — that holds the base and mattress. Frames can be:
- Timber frames — classic and durable; check the joinery and finish.
- Upholstered frames — fabric or leather-look, softer look, often with a padded headboard.
- Metal frames — lightweight and strong; check the powder-coat finish.
3. Matching Base, Frame and Mattress
- The inner dimensions of the frame must match the mattress footprint, not the outer headboard width.
- A King Single mattress needs a King Single base — it will not sit correctly on a Single base.
- If you buy a bedroom suite, the base and frame are usually matched; confirm the mattress size is included or sold separately.
