Dining Table Size Guide: 4, 6 and 8 Seaters
A dining table that is too big crowds the room; one that is too small leaves guests squeezed. This guide covers the dimensions to look for at each seating capacity, plus the clearance you need around the table.
1. Seating Capacity at a Glance

Round tables seat more flexibly — a 1.5 m round table can seat six comfortably.
2. Chair Clearance
- Allow 50 to 60 cm behind each chair when pulled out.
- Allow at least 90 cm of walkway around the table for people to move past seated guests.
- For benches, allow the same clearance as chairs — a bench tucks under the table when not in use.
3. Matching Chairs and Benches
- Drop-leaf tables extend for guests and fold down for everyday use — ideal for smaller dining areas.
- Benches seat more people in less space and tuck away neatly.
- Match chair height to table height — standard dining tables are around 75 cm high.
