Mattress Size Guide NZ: Single to Super King
New Zealand mattress sizes are standardised, but the names still trip people up. This guide explains every size in centimetres, how to match a mattress to your bed base, and how to pick the right size for your room and sleeping arrangement.
1. NZ Mattress Sizes at a Glance
| Size | Dimensions (W x L) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 92 x 188 cm | Kids, guest rooms, compact spaces |
| King Single | 107 x 203 cm | Taller sleepers, growing teens, single adults |
| Double | 138 x 188 cm | One adult, or two on a budget |
| Queen | 153 x 203 cm | Couples, master bedrooms |
| King | 165 x 203 cm | Couples who want extra width |
| Super King | 183 x 203 cm | Large master bedrooms, families co-sleeping |
A quick rule of thumb: a Single suits one child or a guest room, a King Single gives a taller single sleeper extra length, and a Queen is the default for couples. King and Super King add width for larger rooms or families who share a bed.
2. Matching Mattress to Bed Base
A mattress only performs properly on a base built for its size. A King Single mattress will not sit correctly on a Single base, and a Queen mattress needs a Queen frame or slat base.
- Slat bases — check the slat spacing suits your mattress type; pocket-spring mattresses generally need closer slats.
- Bed frames — the inner dimensions of the frame should match the mattress footprint, not the outer headboard width.
- Bunk and trundle beds — almost always Single or King Single; measure clearance before buying a thicker mattress.

3. Choosing a Size for Your Room
- Allow at least 60 cm of clear space on the main side of the bed.
- Allow around 45 cm on the other side and at the foot where possible.
- Measure with the door swing and wardrobe access in mind. A Super King that fits the floor may still block a wardrobe.
4. Choosing a Size for Your Sleepers
- One adult: A King Single or Double is usually enough.
- Two adults: A Queen is the standard starting point; couples who like more space move up to King or Super King.
- Children: A Single is standard; a King Single is a good step-up for teenagers.
- Guest rooms: A Double or Queen covers most guests comfortably.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the standard New Zealand mattress sizes?
- Single (92 x 188 cm), King Single (107 x 203 cm), Double (138 x 188 cm), Queen (153 x 203 cm), King (165 x 203 cm) and Super King (183 x 203 cm).
- What is the most popular mattress size in New Zealand?
- Queen is the most common choice for couples and master bedrooms, balancing sleeping space with room footprint.
- Does a King Single mattress fit a standard single bed base?
- No. A King Single is wider and longer than a Single, so it needs a King Single bed base or frame. Always match the mattress size to the base size.
- How thick should a mattress be?
- Thickness varies by construction. Pocket-spring and pillowtop mattresses are typically thicker than basic innerspring models. Check the height against bunk-bed clearance and your preferred bed height.
- Can I put a new mattress on an old base?
- Only if the base is the same size and in good condition. A sagging or damaged base will shorten the life of a new mattress and can void the warranty.
