Choosing a Mattress for Side Sleepers
Side sleepers put most of their weight through the shoulder and hip. A good mattress lets those points sink in slightly while keeping the spine level.
What to look for
- Comfort feel: medium to medium-soft usually suits side sleepers best; very firm mattresses can press on the shoulder and hip.
- Pressure relief: pocket springs with a foam or latex comfort layer contour to the body and reduce pressure points.
- Support: the mattress should still hold your waist up so your spine stays straight — softer is not always better.
- Your weight and partner: heavier sleepers often need a firmer support core; pocket springs reduce partner movement.
- Pillow: a higher pillow fills the gap between shoulder and head.
